Singapore is revered for its shopping, cuisine, nightlife and for being a world financial centre and one of Travala.com’s top destinations. In December, Singapore’s passion for food and shopping intensifies and if looking to escape the colder climates of Europe and North America, it offers a tropical alternative (and that includes tropical rain) that is possibly the best in Asia.
What to do at Christmas in Singapore
Orchard Road is to Singapore what Oxford Street is to London and every Christmas, it is spectacularly lit up. From Tanglin Mall to Plaza Singapura, the walkways are immersed in light with amusement rides, pop up stores, food trucks and nightly entertainment at the Great Christmas Village. Entry is free.
Pay a visit to Santa Claus on any Saturday or Sunday at Santa’s Village on Tanglin Mall or find him at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel from 6pm to 8pm on weekdays.
For some European Christmas flavour, head to the Festive Market at Christmas Wonderland near Gardens by the Bay. Along with faux snow blizzards, light sculptures and carol singing, you’ll be able to dine on churros and pancakes with an array of toppings.
The Christmas Wonderland is also home to another traditional Christmas experience. Slip on some skates and head to the ice rink (yes, in the tropics of Singapore) for some festive fun.
Staying in the Christmas Wonderland (it really is a wonder) look out for Asia’s tallest luminarie Christmas tree at 21 metres tall and gaze at the the 314-square-metre dazzling luminarie mirror maze.
For kids of all ages head to Universal Studios for “A Universal Christmas” from now until 1 January 2020 and enjoy a raft of special Christmas shows and attractions in addition to the usual activities and rides.
While at Universal Studios, pay a visit to nearby SEA Aquarium. Watch Santa’s elves as they feed the fish while at Scrooge’s Recycling Workshop, kids can discover how unwanted items can be transformed into personalised Christmas ornaments.
If you desire something more upmarket than pancakes then many of Singapore’s luxury hotels deliver Christmas feasts with everything from buffets to extravagant fine dining menus available, even on Christmas Day with the Edge at the Pan Pacific and The Line at the Shangri-La Singapore both booking out very quickly.
Burn off those calories by running an evening marathon or if that seems a bit much for a holiday, there are 1okm, 5km and 2.5km options in the Make a Wish Santa Run each December.
